Even if you are not (at least for the moment) a diver, PSS has a training program that could be of interest to you. Anyone may have found themselves, or may find themselves in the future, having to deal with a casualty in an emergency, due to illness, a work accident, a car crash, etc. All you usually do is call the rescue services and hope that they will arrive in time. Instead, today you can do much more! Thanks to the definition of the procedures enforced by international agencies that are involved in first aid administration, some organizations may teach the public the most appropriate techniques to apply in various situations so when the professional rescue services arrive they find that the casualty has been assisted using the same basic procedures used by them; this is the concept of "homogeneity in the rescue chain".
PSS is one of these organizations and its "First Aid" course is your first step towards a valid and specific training in first aid. The course you will follow is complete and also deals with situations that could occur in or near the water. The module concerning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (C.P.R.) is an additional part and should be included in the course so as to obtain the PSS "First Aid - C.P.R." certification. This is compulsory for any rescue qualification in the other PSS divisions. This is why usually just one single course, combining both areas (First Aid - C.P.R.) is offered. Since there is a different minimum age requirement to attend the course, the C.P.R. module may also be considered separately.
On successfully completing the course you will be awarded the PSS Emergency Procedures certification indicating the first aid procedures in which you received training.
The First Aid certification- with the possible supplementary CPR module - is subject to expiry every two years due to the continuous changes and amendments to the international directives regarding first aid techniques. The certification must be renewed before expiry, otherwise you will have to do the course again.
